On Friday, March 28, 2025, Unity Health Toronto announced the appointment of Mr. Altaf Stationwala as the new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1.

Unity Health Toronto is one of Canada’s largest Catholic healthcare networks serving patients, residents and clients across the full spectrum of care.  In addition to its care for patients, Unity Health is well-known for its world-class research and education. Unity Health includes St. Joseph’s Health Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare.

From the Unity Health announcement:

A highly respected leader in Ontario’s healthcare system, Altaf brings a wealth of expertise in health system operations, integration, and digital transformation. Under his leadership, Unity Health will continue to expand its role as a globally recognized teaching and research-intensive hub. His leadership puts patients and staff at the fore and he comes to Unity with a deep commitment to serving the disadvantaged and upholding the mission and Catholic identity of Unity Health…

…“I am humbled by the opportunity to join Unity Health Toronto and build upon the incredible work that has been done to advance healthcare excellence,” said Altaf. “I look forward to learning from the talented teams across Unity Health’s three hospitals and satellite locations, and leveraging my experience to support continued innovation and leadership in the academic health sciences field. Most importantly, I am deeply aligned with Unity Health’s commitment to Catholic healthcare, and I am committed to upholding the organization’s legacy of compassionate care that prioritizes the well-being of our patients, staff, and community.”

The Archdiocese of Toronto offers our prayers and best wishes for Mr. Stationwala as he takes on this new role as we also give thanks for outgoing President & CEO, Dr. Tim Rutledge, who is retiring after more than seven years in leadership.

May Unity Health continue the long-standing tradition of treating every patient with compassion, dignity and respect, following the example of Jesus to love and serve. These values have been embedded in its Catholic health-care facilities since their founding by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Toronto more than 130 years ago.
